INT. APARTMENT - FOUR EPISODES IN A ROW - SATURDAY AFTERNOON

Shōgun spends nine episodes setting up a war between Lord Toranaga and the council of regents. The finale has no battle in it. Toranaga wins anyway, offscreen, and the show trusts you to understand how.

The plan

Before Yabushige’s ritual suicide, Toranaga finally tells him the truth. Mariko’s death in Osaka was part of the plan from the start. It shamed Ishido, broke the council apart, and decided the war before anyone drew a sword. Hiroyuki Sanada plays the scene with almost no expression, and it is the most frightening he has been all season.

The war is over before anyone draws a sword.

Mariko

Anna Sawai gives the show its heart, and the finale treats her absence with care. Her death happened an episode earlier. This hour is about what it bought and who has to live with it. Blackthorne, who spent the series believing he was Toranaga’s partner, ends it in Ajiro, useful to Toranaga and not much more.

Why four stars and not five

The middle of the season moves slowly, and a few of the Osaka subplots feel like setup for more setup. The finale earns most of that back. It is quiet and patient, and it assumes you were paying attention. The show won 18 Emmys in 2024, a record for a single season, and this episode makes a good case for them.
