INT. DORM ROOM - LAPTOP, ONE EARBUD EACH - 1:40 AM
Severance spends most of its time in white hallways that all look the same. “Woe’s Hollow” sends the innies somewhere they have never been: outdoors, in winter, for an ORTBO, which Lumon defines as an Outdoor Retreat and Team-Building Occurrence.
Mark, Helly, Dylan, and Irving have never seen weather. Watching them march through snow in matching parkas is the funniest the show has been. The jokes come from the same place as the dread. Every new thing they see is something Lumon chose to show them, and they have no way to tell what is real.
Kier, with a straight face
The retreat is built around a piece of Kier Eagan’s founding myth. Lumon presents its founder’s legend with total seriousness, and the show matches it. The more solemn the ritual gets, the funnier and creepier it becomes.
The outdoors turns out to be just another room Lumon built.
Why it works
Most of the season is about the innies pushing against the walls. This episode takes the walls away and shows that the walls were never the real problem. A frozen lake under an empty sky can be as controlled as a hallway.
SPOILERS The last scene
The final minutes reveal that the Helly we followed through the snow was Helena Eagan, her outie, the whole time. Go back and watch her earlier scenes. Britt Lower plays both women so precisely that the clues are all there, and still easy to miss.
